Things on The Challenge: Battle of the Eras, didn’t go well for Horacio Gutierrez and Nurys Mateo, after the couple was ripped apart following her elimination, and now, fellow alums are opening up about how they feel bad for Horacio as a result.
Fans were furious after the eliminations took place, after Nurys was one of the eight competitors ousted in the first two weeks of the competition.
The season, which is set to be full of “must-see” moments, is one Nurys later reflected on, admitting that competing with her boyfriend likely “hindered” her game.
Now, Zach Nichols is opening up on the situation as well, sharing on his podcast that it was also likely a difficult situation for Horacio, who had the power to decide on who would go up against Nurys in the elimination challenge.
Speaking in a clip on the Zach Nichols Podcast, he admitted that it had to be hard for the current competitor to send his girlfriend into an elimination round that eventually saw her ousted from the competition.
“I think the worst you can find yourself in The Challenge is watching your significant other in a physical elimination round when they don’t belong,” he said.
He further went on to explain that Nurys wasn’t as good ast physical challenges, and much better at endurance or puzzle events.
“Nurys did what I thought she would try to do. She was gonna try to win with speed,” he said, before adding that she got the “worst elimination” for her skillset.
Nurys faced off against Olivia Kaiser in the Hall Brawl challenge, after calling her out during deliberation, and Horacio and Michele Fitzgerald agreed with her and opted to send Olivia into the elimination.

Despite her best effort, Nurys was unable to best her opponent, ending her time on the show early.
The only other women she could have competed against were former Challenge winners Kaycee Clark and Jenny West, who were both also impressive in physical events.
Nurys, as well as Paulie Calafiore, were the first eliminees from Era IV competitors.
The other eliminees were Era III’s Amanda Garcia and Leroy Garrett, Era II’s KellyAnne Judd and Brandon Nelson, and Era I’s Mark Long and Katie Cooley.
